Take the north road from the Three Roads, under Thunderhead and on across the grassland until it stops. Over the rise beyond its end is Haywick, a farming village: thatched cottages round a green with an old oak in the middle, and fields all about.
- The great barn stands on the north side of the green. Its doors are open on both sides: walk straight through across the threshing floor, past the hay and the wain, and out to the fields.
- The fields — wheat, barley and beans — are walled with dry stone. Go in at a gateway and wade through the crop; there is a scarecrow in the wheat.
- The hay meadow has its ricks, the orchard its apples and its hives, and the farmhouse its granary up on staddle stones, where the rats cannot climb.
Like Lastwater there is no inn, so it is a place to visit. On the map it is the little sheaf of wheat; the fingerpost at the Three Roads points up the north road to it.
