Lastwater

Take the south road from the Three Roads, past the Anvil and up over the heights. Where it forks, keep on south, down onto the sand, and follow it west: about a kilometre from the inn it comes to a lake on the edge of the Silent Sands — the last water before them. Lastwater is the village there, built of sun-dried brick, flat-roofed, among the palms.

  • The gate the road comes in by is the start of a town wall that was never finished.
  • The well-house stands in the middle of the square under a blue dome, open on all four sides. Walk in: the well is full to the brim.
  • The market is the stalls round the well, under striped awnings.
  • The jetty runs out into the lake from the palms on the shore.
  • Some of the houses have outside stairs. Climb one, and the roof is yours to look out from over the square and the water.

There is no inn at Lastwater, so you cannot make your home there — it is a place to visit. On the map it is the little palm.

The world is waiting.
