Some knowledge in this world is an object. A Memory is a thing you carry, and while you carry it you know something — a rite, a truth about what happened here — that changes what you can do and what people will say to you.
Because it is an object, it can be given away, traded, or lost. Dying loses it. That is the point: knowledge here has a price and an owner.
